Important: these are reference rates, not live trading prices and not an offer to exchange money. Banks, card networks and exchange offices add their own margins and fees, so the rate you actually get will usually be less favorable. Last reviewed: October 22, 2026.

How This Converter Works

The converter loads daily reference rates published by the European Central Bank (ECB) through the free Frankfurter API. Rates are updated on business days, usually in the afternoon Central European Time. On weekends and holidays you will see the most recent business day’s rates. Your numbers are processed in your browser and are not stored.

Why You Rarely Get the Exact Rate

The rate you see in a converter is close to the “mid-market” rate, the midpoint between buying and selling prices. Banks and exchange services usually build a margin into their rate and may add fees on top. That is why it helps to compare what you will actually receive, and why this tool includes a fee field.

Many cards charge a foreign transaction fee of around 3%, while some cards charge none. Check your card’s terms.

6 Ways to Get a Better Rate When Traveling

  • Pay in the local currency. If a terminal offers to charge you in your home currency (dynamic currency conversion), it is often a worse rate. Choose the local currency.
  • Use a card with no foreign transaction fee for purchases abroad.
  • Plan ATM withdrawals. Check your bank’s international ATM fees and the machine’s own fee, and withdraw fewer, larger amounts if it is safe to do so.
  • Avoid airport exchange kiosks when you can. Their rates are often among the least favorable.
  • Compare before you exchange. Use this converter as a benchmark and see how far an offer is from the reference rate.
  • Carry a small amount of local cash for places that do not take cards, and keep your cards secure.

Each tip answers a different question. Select one.

Local currency. When a terminal asks whether to pay in your home currency or the local one, the home-currency option (dynamic currency conversion) often carries a worse rate. Choose the local currency and compare the result with the converter above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these real-time exchange rates?

No. They are daily reference rates from the European Central Bank, updated on business days. Live market rates move throughout the day and can differ.

Why is my bank’s rate different?

Banks and exchange providers add a margin and sometimes a fee. The reference rate here is a benchmark, not the rate you will necessarily receive.

Which currencies are supported?

About 30 major currencies published by the ECB, including USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, CAD, AUD, CHF, MXN and BRL.

Does this tool store my data?

No. Your amounts stay in your browser. The tool only requests public rate data.
